Government operates best when it functions least. The core principles of limited government, local control, and a free market that were brought to the forefront during the Reagan years ring ever true today. For decades, the Federal Government has been bloated and out of control. To reverse these trends, it is imperative that the Republican Party advocate for local control. But beyond that, we must also push for greater transparency at every level of governance. Few positive things happen in secret or behind closed doors, and we must hold all of our elected accountable for their words and actions by fighting for greater transparency in the political process.
The most important thing in my life is my relationship with the Lord. I was raised by a single mother who washed dishes in a local hospital. We lived in government housing and barely made ends-meet. In the midst of hard times, my mother taught me to rely on the Lord. And that has guided me through my entire life. Today, I’m honored to lead two Bible study-groups in the Brenham area and serve as an advisory board member for both the National Christian Foundation and Young Life.
The Republican Party should be a champion for religious liberties. All Americans should be able to freely practice their religious beliefs without fear of government repercussion. The Republican Party of Texas should champion legislation that protects individuals from having to violate their constitutionally protected personal religious principles or beliefs out of fear of a lawsuit or government retribution.
The Republican Party is the party of principles and should operate as such. We must never cease advocating for the values of faith, family, and liberty that have made our state and our party strong.
After the disastrous consequences of Obamacare, it is imperative that Republicans lead the charge on health care reform. Successful reform will include more affordable care through a patient-centered, transparent healthcare system, based on free market principles. When competition is encouraged, health care costs will ultimately be driven down. The past few years have emphatically shown that when health care is controlled by the federal government, patients, businesses, and the medical industry suffer. An active federal government in the health care system leads to higher costs, longer wait times, and diminished care. A health care system constructed of health savings accounts, interstate competition, and price transparency is needed to ensure that costs stay low and quality remains high.
Since January 1 of this year, there have already been over 410,000 babies aborted in the United States. Roughly 20% of all pregnancies in the United States end with an abortion. Let us not be the generation that stood idly by as these heinous acts continued. Rather, let our generation fight until abortion is outlawed and every life is valued and legally protected. I believe life begins at conception. As Republicans, I believe it is our greatest charge to speak for those without a voice and advocate for those without an advocate. The Republican Party of Texas should take a bold and unwavering stance on this issue. We must work tirelessly to ensure that legislation to protect life and restrict abortion must remain a top priority for our legislature. We must work tirelessly until Roe v. Wade is overturned and life is valued at every level of government. We must collectively advocate that all life is precious- born or unborn, young or old. Every life should have the legally protected right to live.
I believe in law and order, and I believe our nation and our state function best when we maintain order and enforce our laws. This is abundantly clear in the case of our nation’s borders. Each day, gangs, drug cartels, criminals, and unknown persons disappear into our country after crossing our porous border. Our immigration and visa system is broken, but before we can address meaningful reform, we first must ensure that our borders are secured. A secure border is the first step to achieving law and order.
Amnesty must never be allowed. I applaud the Texas Legislature, Lt Governor Patrick and Governor Abbott for enacting a ban on Sanctuary Cities. We must continue to work to ensure that all criminals are identified and removed from our state.
Those in our country illegally should not have access to in-state tuition or other benefits reserved for legal residents.
After our border is secured, the federal government should begin taking steps to eradicate the bureaucratic red tape that is creating a backlog in our legal entry visa system.
Defending the 2nd Amendment
The 2nd amendment is the greatest protectant against an overinflated, out of control government. It doesn’t just grant the ability to defend ourselves, our families, and our properties- rather, it mandates the ability for all Americans to defend their inherent, constitutionally guaranteed rights. The Republican Party of Texas must oppose any law that infringes on the people’s right to keep and bear arms. Texas should take a bold stand in opposing any federal laws that restrict 2nd amendment rights.
As a member of the National Rifle Association Outreach Committee, avid hunter, and sportsman, I believe the Republican Party must outspokenly protect and defend the right to keep and bear arms.
Every child should have access to a quality education. Similarly, every parent should have the ability to control and direct their child’s education, including the right to send their child to charter, private, public, religious, or home schools. The federal government has time and again proven it is unfit to manage education. Power should be returned to parents and teachers. I believe our education system will be strongest if funds follow the student. Quality education is most attainable if parents have the ability to direct and choose the path that is best for their child.
Jobs and the Economy
Year after year, Texas is ranked as one of the top states for job growth and business. Our state remains a beacon for economic growth and prosperity. The Republican Party of Texas should continue to work to support economic opportunity and an environment that fosters business growth. Businesses and workers both succeed when government stays off their backs and out of their pocket books. The Republican Party of Texas should continue to advocate for less regulation, lower taxes, and more transparency in the market. We must defend the free market system that has helped make the Lone Star State the best place to live, work, and raise a family.
